1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing

I spent a lot of time with this masterpiece recently when I matched it up against a brand spanking new 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG from work. That post can be found here: Kickingtires.net. Watching the new car try to dominate the elder statesman reminded me of some new whipper snapper trying to upstage the Most Interesting Man in the World. In other words… Step off new guy… It’s not gonna happen.

Now you can raise your arms and scream horsepower, modern technology, exhaust note (probably the only place the SLS trumps the 300SL), or just creature comforts but come on, the 300SL is in a design class all it’s own. It’s dashboard elements alone leave me breathless and that’s after spending more than 20 minutes of my time admiring the doors and their hinges.

As soon as I win the lottery, I’ll be ready to own one of these… But until then… we’ll always have the 40 minutes together in that one place, you know, holding hands, you whispering sweet nothings and me opening and closing your gullwings. I can still smell the leather. Downloadable photos can always be found here: Shiny Side Flickr
